Abstract
Disruptive clinician behavior is not just an administration problem but an entire organization’s problem, and it will take all individuals in the organization to correct unwanted behavior and to change the culture of the organization. Establishing guidelines to deal with disruptive clinician behavior is the first step but does not stop there; enforcing the standards for all levels is the key to a successful program and a healthy work environment. A healthy work environment is the foundation of staff retention, reduction in medical error, and positive patient safety outcomes. Nurses can also be a powerful force in correcting disruptive behavior among their own ranks by being proactive in reversing the cycle of abuse of colleagues. The bottom line is that an improved organizational culture will improve all aspects of patient safety.
